How do you know if you pet needs a dental cleaning? Bad breath is one sure sign. Halitosis (bad breath) originates from bacteria and food debris caught under the gums lying against the teeth. Dogs and cats can’t brush their teeth as humans can, so food remnants sit in small pockets of gum tissue. Eventually bacteria act on these substances causing a disagreeable odor. The food and bacteria form a film, called dental plaque. Within days, the plaque hardens in to tartar, creating rough surfaces for more plaque and tartar.
The Veterinary Oral Health Council lists the following as the potential effects of periodontal disease:
- Bad Breath
- Bleeding and oral pain
- Loss of appetite or dropping food from mouth while eating
- Loose teeth or teeth falling out
- Microscopic damage in kidneys, heart muscle and liver
THE KEY TO KEEPING GUMS HEALTHY– FOR BOTH PEOPLE AND PETS–IS PREVENTION! IN OTHER WORDS, CLEAN THOSE TEETH FREQUENTLY!
