Feeding my cat

Feeding my cat

Many cat owners ask Dr. Flanders how much or little should I be feeding my cat.  Another question is the wet verses dry issue.  So today we will discuss those two issues.

  1.  Wet vs. Dry Cat Food
    1. Dr. Flanders always recommends dry kibble because the crunching of the kibble helps knock the tarter off their teeth.
    2. Since most of us do not brush our kitty’s teeth, this is an easy way to encourage dental health of kitty.
    3. Wet cat food is fine for an occasional treat, but tends to be higher in fat and sodium than dry.
  2. How much should I feed my cat?
    1. There are some factors that influence how much you should be such as age, any disease effecting kitty and exercise.
    2. In general, one quarter to one third of a cup of dry kibble is acceptable for a 5 pound cat in good health.
    3. If your kitty is more active, then you may need to adjust that level up.
    4. In the same token, if your kitty has diseases or is less active, you may need to adjust this level down.
