How can I tell if my dog is relaxed?

Since pets can’t verbalize to us their feelings and emotions, we have to rely on their body language to decode their mood and overall well being.  Look for these clues to tell if your canine is relaxed and generally happy!

  1. Mouth open and panting
  2. Eyes almost squinting, eyes an almost almond shape
  3. Tail will be almost equal to the spine and neutral
  4. Ears are slightly back or equal out at the sides of the body.
  5. Even though they are panting, they should not be emitting extra heat (showing stress)
  6. Hair should appear relaxed, even on a wire haired dog.  A stressed pet will shred extra hair or have hair raised.
  7. General posture should be at rest, sitting or laying.
