Your dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times as acute as your own.
They have 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses.
These two facts allow them to smell such minute amounts of cancer, drugs etc on us. This is how they find a lost child by smelling their clothes, they track the traces left in the air that we cannot detect.
Every human has a unique scent fingerprint to the dog which allows them to tell each of us apart. We don’t realize that when we walk anywhere, we drop skin cells and these allow dogs to recognize our scent. That’s why a dog may lay on your “dirty” clothes when you are gone.
