Pet Poisons: Bugs, Bees, etc

Sometimes we forget that some poisons aren’t man made.  Bugs and bees can sting and bite our pets poisoning them, which in some pets, just like people, can be life threatening!  All those creepy crawlers are defending themselves just like your dog bites or your cat scratches in defense.  These can include bees, bumblebees, hornets, yellow jackets, spiders, mosquitos, ants, wasps, caterpillars, snakes, ticks and chiggers.

Most are going to be harmless, but others may require treatment.  If your pet experiences any of the following, it is best to call and bring them in for a check.

  • wheezing
  • swelling
  • weakness
  • lethargy
  • fever
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • hives
  • trouble breathing

Yellow jackets are most likely to sting in late summer.  They hover around trash and food, which is right where many dogs will also nose around in for good smells and eats!

Mosquitos not only carry heart worms, but the West Nile Virus and Encephalitis which can affect you as well as your pets.

Chiggers are usually never a life threatening bite, but very painful and itchy.  Many times we need to treat an infection from excessive scratching at the bites!
