Pig ears are still a Salmonella risk despite interventions.
Pig ear treats remain a source of salmonella after decades of illnesses.
- October 2019 was the last outbreak with at least 154 illnesses and 25 people hospitalized.
- There have been outbreaks since 1999
- People should wash their hands after handling any pet treats.
- Pet food and treats can be contaminated with Salmonella.
- Most companies processing pig ear treats lack sufficient pathogen controls in their processing facilities.
- You don’t want to land you or your pet in the hospital to save a few dollars on pet treats.

Your dog’s kibble can be used as a treat

Green beans, carrots and popcorn can be a great treat, instead of treats filled with preservatives and not knowing if they present a health threat to you or your pet.

It’s not worth risking your pet’s health! Stay away from using pig ears for your dogs.
