Pig ears are still a Salmonella risk despite interventions.

Pig ear treats remain a source of salmonella after decades of illnesses.

  • October 2019 was the last outbreak with at least 154 illnesses and 25 people hospitalized.
  • There have been outbreaks since 1999
  • People should wash their hands after handling any pet treats.
  • Pet food and treats can be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Most companies processing pig ear treats lack sufficient pathogen controls in their processing facilities.
  • You don’t want to land you or your pet in the hospital to save a few dollars on pet treats.
  •

Your dog’s kibble can be used as a treat

Green beans, carrots and popcorn can be a great treat, instead of treats filled with preservatives and not knowing if they present a health threat to you or your pet.

It’s not worth risking your pet’s health!  Stay away from using pig ears for your dogs.
