Walking is not only physical activity but mental activity as well

Yes, I am still talking about walking your dog.  Now that we know some tips for how to walk our dog properly, let’s discuss how it helps them physically and mentally.

  • Physically
    • Walking is great for all of us.  Dogs need exercise just as you and I do.  Walking is easy, so why not.
    • Keeps their joints working, keeps them limber, and gets their heart pumping for cardiovascular health.
    • Keeps their weight in check.
    • Helps relieve constipation.
    • Helps them relax and sleep better
  • Mentally
    • Many of us forget about the mental factor.
    • Walking promotes the endorphins to be stimulated just as in us.  This creates the “good feeling” after exercise.
    • Yes your pet can suffer from depression just as you and I can.  Exercise is natural way to help alleviate depression.
    • The smell time during a walk is extremely important for their mental health.
    • Sniffing is like conversations for you and I, so make sure they get at least 5 minutes of smell time on a 30 minute walk.
    • Walks provide mental stimulation that can decrease destructive behavior like chewing up things and digging.
    • Strengthens your bond with your pet.
    • Less whining and barking
