What does back to school mean for your pets?

August 1st is a signal that many schools are starting back into session right now or in just a few short weeks or days.  Whether it is college age students or elementary and high school, it is a change in routine from summertime for you and your pets!

Don’t be surprised if your pet is out of sorts for a few weeks due to these changes in routine.

  • Pets can be depressed because they have had more attention in the summer than the rest of the year.  Don’t worry, most will adapt back to the “normal” school year routine.  Make sure you are giving them plenty of attention in the evening and on weekends.
  • It is okay if their eating habits are lower for a few weeks too.  Pets are similar to us in that appetite can be influenced by their mood.
  • My dogs know when the kids are packing up to head back to college.  They will lay in front of the door to their rooms, give you the sad eyes and generally mope around for a few days after they leave.  I let mine go into their rooms and smell and even put them on the bed to signal they are not here right now.  Extra love and play are essential during this time.
